Threshold Concepts
Threshold Concept 1
After "Invisible Man" By Ralph Ellison, The Prologue
|
The Destroyed Room, 1978
|
There are two main images that seem to be obviously staged, for example 'The Destroyed room' as you can see on the left side of the image through the door frame that the room seems to not be a real room but instead seems to be on some kind of set. The room also seems to have been deliberately destroyed and messed up.
The other image that seems to be obviously staged is 'After "Invisible man" By Ralph Ellison' the thing that makes this image seem obviously staged is the number of lightbulbs on the ceiling this makes the image feel staged as that is not a typical thing to see in a room this may have been done on purpose to make the viewer think or feel certain things about the piece or maybe just to add to the clutter and chaos already present in the room. |
Why might the artist want to mislead the viewer (but perhaps not fully)?
Do any/all of the images leave you with questions or wanting further information? What role do the titles of the photographs play in shaping your understanding? Do some/all of the images have a similar style? |
Threshold Concept 2
Camera Obscura
In its simplest form, a camera obscura is a completely blacked out/dark room, possibly done by covering the windows with black card, with a small hole on one side. When it's bright outside light enters through the hole causing an upside down image of what is outside to show onto the wall opposite the hole.
Examples of Camera Obscura through the work of Abelardo Morell:
Abelardo Mordell
Abelardo Morell is a photographer known for his use of camera obscura to capture images, he first made a picture using camera obscura techniques in his living room in 1991. He did this by covering all his windows with black plastic so he could achieve total darkness and then cutting a small hole in one side of the material that covered the windows. He says that in the beginning exposure took 5-10 hours.

What is his work mainly about?
What does he teach us about threshold concept number 2? How has he captured light? What materials are used? Do you think that this is still a photographic technique? How could this process be used now? What materials would you need to construct this experiment? |
